Cannon Beach, Oregon: A Personal Magical Sunset Beach Shoot

Life has a way of surprising us. My daughter, Ava, had eagerly anticipated her 8th-grade promotion, and we had planned a special beach photoshoot to celebrate. Unfortunately, just days before the ceremony, she fell ill and missed both the event and our scheduled session. As time passed and life became hectic, our beach shoot was indefinitely postponed.

Recently, I traveled to Portland to photograph a wedding. Ava, sharing my adventurous spirit, asked to join me. It was the perfect way to squeeze in some 1:1 time with my girl after the wedding. Seizing the opportunity, we decided to finally have her beach session. After a quick shopping trip for an outfit, we embarked on a 1.5-hour drive west to the Pacific coast, racing against the setting sun.

Arriving with only 30 minutes to spare before sunset, the scene was breathtaking. The sky painted in hues of pink and orange provided a stunning backdrop. Capturing Ava in this light was a profound experience. Through my lens, I saw not just my daughter but a poised young woman on the brink of high school.

As experienced adventure elopement photographers, Helder and I have the privilege of exploring remarkable locations with our clients. Sharing this experience with Ava was special. She witnessed firsthand the beauty of the places we bring our clients to and the joy that comes with these adventures.

Ava loved the experience, and it was a poignant reminder of why we are passionate about our work. While missing the initial session in California was disappointing, it led to an unforgettable evening on an iconic beach—a memory we will both treasure.

Practical Tips for a Cannon Beach Elopement:

  • Timing is Key: Sunrise and sunset provide the most flattering light and fewer crowds. Planning your ceremony during these times ensures a serene atmosphere and stunning photographs.

  • Permit Requirements: For simple ceremonies with fewer than 50 guests and minimal setup, no permit is required. Larger gatherings or those with significant setups may need a special use permit.

  • Accommodation: Staying near the beach allows for easy access to your ceremony location. Local inns and vacation rentals offer cozy accommodations with beautiful views.
